How do you know if you need a liver detox?
The essential role of liver detox
From a medical perspective, the liver is an organ specifically designed to detoxify the body by filtering out toxins, metabolic waste, and other harmful substances. It transforms these substances into less toxic elements, then eliminated by the body.
Liver detox cures are an “extra boost” for the body: they combat the inflammatory state of the body, stimulate the emunctories and eliminate waste. Consequently, they further stimulate liver detoxification and provide better vitality.
Warning: certain recommendations for extreme detoxification or "cleansing" of the liver, not based on solid scientific evidence (exclusive consumption of vegetable/fruit juice, complete fasting, etc.), can be potentially harmful.
In case of excess toxins, cleaning your liver proves useful
However, the liver can be subjected to prolonged stress under certain conditions and lose efficiency. For example, following the Christmas holidays, at the end of winter when we overindulged in comfort food - fatty and sugary food - after regularly drinking evenings or following an “overdose” of Easter eggs. The liver then quickly becomes overwhelmed and toxins are eliminated less well. In such cases, to support liver function and regain body homeostasis (body balance), we return to the basics of a healthy lifestyle: balanced diet, physical activity, moderate alcohol consumption and elimination of toxic substances in our daily lives.
Small natural “helpings” exist to promote the evacuation of toxins:
- purify and drain the body with diluted lemon juice, to drink on an empty stomach every morning;
- include anti-inflammatory foods in your diet: turmeric, green tea, black radish, artichoke, ginger, chicory, and of course, fresh pollen and propolis ;
- drink lots of water and infusions (up to 2L/day): herbal teas from linden sapwood, dandelion, birch, horsetail, nettle, rosemary;
- intermittent or occasional fasting;
- more sport to boost metabolism, sweat and promote elimination.
During this period of rebalancing of the body, inconveniences may appear: fatigue, headaches, skin inflammation, etc. Acne breakouts are possible following the release of accumulated toxins. A detox can sometimes cause breakouts, but don't worry: this is a sign that your body is purging and the detox is working. We explain to you why this happens and we give you the right actions to adopt to manage spots during your detox.
Detox cure and appearance of spots
Why do you get pimples during detox?
During a detoxification process, activation of the emunctories (the organs and systems of the body that help eliminate waste and toxins) can result in temporary effects in response to the increased elimination of toxins. The liver, considered the main emunctory, plays a crucial role in this process. It filters the blood, metabolizes toxins and transforms harmful substances into less harmful compounds, which are then eliminated by other organs.
The skin, the secondary emunctory, also has an important role. Through the pores of the skin, toxins can be eliminated. During a period of detoxification, when the body is actively eliminating unwanted substances, the skin may respond by showing signs such as pimples or rashes. A temporary increase in acne may appear. These rashes are especially common in those who have sensitive, easily inflamed skin or those who experience regular episodes of stress.
Likewise, changes induced by a more balanced lifestyle and diet, during detoxification, can affect hormonal balance, thus contributing to the appearance of spots.
