The different breeds of Mellifera bees
Today the best known bees are the bees raised by our beekeepers: the bees of the APIS breed, and more specifically the species : Apis mellifera .
Apis means “bee” and mellifera “which gives honey”
The most common bees in the Mellifera race:
The bee Apis mellifera mellifera or the black bee (which gives reference to its color) is the best-known bee in Europe and quite common in France. Particularly appreciated by farmers because it resists winters and different types of diseases well.
The bee Apis Mellifera Ligustica, yellow in color and of Italian origin, is well known throughout the world thanks to its queen who is very fertile, allowing rapid development. However, it is particularly appreciated in warmer countries because it is quite fragile in winter.
The bee Apis mellifera caucasica, gray in color, very hairy and native to the Caucasian mountains, it produces a lot of propolis. Thanks to its long tongue, this allows it to forage on deeper flowers.
The bee Apis mellifera carnica, yellow in color and native to the Carpathian mountains. It is very present in urban areas because it rarely bites and easily adapts to different climates. It grows quickly in spring, produces a lot of honey and collects a lot of pollen. Failure? She builds her hive poorly.
