Which type of exfoliation is right for my skin ?

What is exfoliation?
A healthy gesture to reoxygenate your skin
Exfoliating your skin is a natural and incredibly effective way to achieve smoother, more beautiful skin. Refine, exfoliate, unclog, renew, smooth: exfoliation can tone, brighten, and smooth your skin. But what exactly is skin exfoliation? It's a type of scrub that aims to remove dead cells from the stratum corneum and unclog pores. Whether mechanical (with grains) or chemical (with mild acids), exfoliation can help restore smoother, more even, and brighter skin.
Brand new cells, soft skin
Knowing that our skin cells naturally renew themselves approximately every 4 to 6 weeks, exfoliating helps accelerate the shedding process. Indeed, this process can slow down due to various factors: aging, sun exposure, or lifestyle, for example. By exfoliating, our skin becomes instantly smooth. It's an ideal health and beauty step to incorporate into a weekly skincare routine. It can be practiced on both the face and body. When done properly, regular facial exfoliation offers numerous benefits, including renewed radiance and optimal cell regeneration.
The benefits of skin exfoliation
Beyond refining skin texture and brightening the face, exfoliation slows the skin's aging process, stimulates its self-regulating abilities, and improves its elasticity. Here are its main benefits in detail:
- Restores skin's radiance
- Purifies and detoxifies the stratum corneum: pores are unclogged
- Fight against imperfections
- Promotes the regeneration of the epidermis
- Improves collagen production
- Visibly reduces fine lines and pigmentation spots
- Improves skin elasticity
- Protects against free radical damage
- Makes the skin very soft
- Boosts and improves the absorption of skincare products
Skin exfoliation, a beauty gesture practiced for thousands of years
During the Middle Kingdom (circa 2030–1650 BC), wealthy Egyptian women adopted a beauty ritual before applying makeup. They began by preparing their skin. In addition to using oils infused with flowers or spices to soften their skin, they might exfoliate with Dead Sea salts or soak in a milk bath—milk and honey masks being the most popular treatments.

In Ayurvedic medicine in India, Ubtan comes in the form of a natural paste. It is used to cleanse and exfoliate the skin. Its traces can be found in the Vedas, a Sanskrit literature dating back to the 6th century BC. This powder, composed of various ingredients such as turmeric, chickpeas, sand, and various herbs, is applied using circular motions to the body and face to gently exfoliate the skin. This practice eliminates dead cells, stimulates skin regeneration, and provides a luminous complexion. Ubtan is particularly valued for its antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties.
In Japan, rice powder is traditionally used with milk and water to exfoliate and restore radiance to the skin. Thus, we see that this age-old gesture has always served the beauty of women, enhancing and preserving their skin texture, spreading a harmonious radiance to their face.
The 3 main types of exfoliation
There are 3 types of exfoliants:
- mechanical
- chemicals
- mixed which combine the two previous ones
Generally, the exfoliant contains fruit pits, sugar or sand microbeads which will break down dead cells thanks to the “massage” effect.
Mechanical exfoliation is done manually (by gently massaging with the fingertips) using small grains that loosen and dislodge dead cells. It works thanks to the heat generated by this action.
Our Organic Gentle Facial Scrub contains natural grains from castor oil combined with the wonderful powers of pollen. Nourishing, healing, and moisturizing castor oil is packed with benefits. Thanks to its ricinoleic acid and antibacterial properties, it also deeply purifies the skin. A true champion that works to keep your skin healthy and soft! What's more, our scrub respects the hydrolipidic film thanks to the natural micro-grains in its oily jelly. Our customers love it:
"The result is there from the first use, it doesn't attack the skin but remains effective. You don't need a huge amount, just a small amount, so it's great value for money!"
"Easy to use product that leaves the skin soft, smooth and fresh."
The advantage of mechanical scrubs? They're ultra-fast. In 5 seconds, your skin becomes soft and luminous again.
Directions: Apply the exfoliant to damp skin using light circular motions with your fingertips for a few seconds. Then rinse with warm water. Always follow with our hydrating mask or a nourishing treatment.
Chemical exfoliation (acid or enzymatic), which is often gentler, uses fruit acids (such as AHAs) or enzymes. This is the case with our Organic Detox Mask , which contains a high concentration of fruit acids (AHAs). Our customers love it:
"This mask gently exfoliates and has a pleasant, subtle scent. Very pleasant to use."
