Why are bees so fascinating?
They have a reputation for stinging those who put them in danger, but these thousand-year-old workers are above all insects with rare intelligence, capable of producing treasures for us, men. We give you 6 reasons to raise them to the rank of queens.
They are a centerpiece of our planet.
Without bees, most crops would disappear. They are in fact the champions of pollination (fertilization between flowering plants of the same species). Whatever their variety, they pollinate a very large number of plants vital to humans. Without them, our resources and the balance of the planet would therefore be fatally endangered. However, bees are in decline. The cause: disease and the degradation of their habitat. It is up to us, therefore, to protect them.
They have (more than) 1000 faces.
You may believe that there are only a small handful of bee species. In reality, more than 25,000 are known today and many are still to be discovered. Each has its own specificities and participates in its own way in our eco-system. We challenge you to recognize the next bee that will try to sip your pressed juice.
They are not from yesterday.
The first known species of bees existed 270 million years ago. Man has been harvesting their honey for 8,000 years. In the West, beekeeping developed in the Middle Ages while Egypt was already producing honey 4,500 years ago. Suffice it to say that all the resources produced by bees have constituted a treasure trove of benefits for millennia. It is not surprising to see that they are rising to the rank of influencers even in the economic sphere since their activity contributes more than 187 billion per year to global wealth. Just that.
They are super hardworking.
7 species produce honey. Only two of these species have been domesticated. Honey bee colonies are often a very impressive sight. Governed like a superorganism, they are organized around the Queen, workers and males. The Queen is the mother of each bee in the hive (she lays more than 2000 eggs per day!). And his descendants inherit his characteristics. It was indeed observed that a Queen in a bad mood generated a colony... in a bad mood.
They produce gold.
Honey, propolis, royal jelly, pollen… products from the hive alone have an extra-wide range of medicinal properties. While honey is recognized for its moisturizing (thanks to its floral water content), energizing, antioxidant and healing properties, royal jelly is one of the richest substances in nature. Its exceptional content of essential nutrients promotes cell renewal, preserves the elasticity of the skin and gives it a nice boost. Propolis (already used by the Roman armies on wounds) is an extraordinary antiseptic, antibacterial, fungicide and healing agent. Pollen is not left out. Very rich in essential amino acids, vitamin E, B group vitamins, carotenoids, and polyphenols, it relieves dry and damaged skin, protects skin cells from the aging process and strengthens the intestinal flora.
They know how to lead the dance.
Who said you have to know how to speak to be understood? To maintain the colony's reserves and signal the best food sites, the foragers have developed a unique communication system: they dance! By drawing figures in the shape of an eight and playing with directional angles, cadence, wriggling of wings and the length of their ballet, they communicate with great precision. Olé!
